What is Right For Me?

Learn more about your overdraft coverage options to determine what type of coverage might work best to help you avoid overdrafts.

What happens if I don’t have any overdraft protection services?

Please know that we understand that mistakes happen. Sometimes you might write a check or initiate another transaction without having enough money in your account. At City, we’ll waive the fees for the first two non-sufficient funds (NSF) items you incur during the life of your account1. Beyond that, NSF items will be treated as follows:

If you write a check or make a recurring payment for more money than you have in your account, City will return the item unpaid, and a $36 NSF fee will be assessed against your account.

If you attempt to make a debit card purchase or ATM withdrawal for more money than you have in your account, the transaction will be declined, and no fee will be assessed.

*Overdraft Line of Credit. Subject to credit approval. The line of credit is unsecured, and the Annual Percentage Rate will be 18% and will not increase while the line is open.

**Customer Overdraft Policy. Not available on Teen, Bounce Back and Checkless checking accounts or accounts enrolled in the Fresh Start repayment plan. An insufficient balance could result from 1) the payment of checks, electronic funds transfers, or other withdrawal requests; 2) payments authorized by you; 3) the return of unpaid items deposited by you; 4) the imposition of bank service charges; or 5) the deposit of items which, according to the bank’s Funds Availability Policy, are treated as not yet available or finally paid. Overdrafts are paid at the bank’s discretion, and we reserve the right not to pay. However, if you maintain your account in good standing (defined as making regular deposits and bringing your account to a positive balance at least once every 30 days), and there are no legal orders outstanding, we may approve reasonable overdrafts as a non-contractual courtesy. The NSF fee(s) of $36 for each NSF item will be imposed when covering overdrafts created by check, in-person withdrawal, ATM withdrawal or other electronic means. You may opt out of the privilege at any time, but you are responsible for any overdrawn balances at the time of opting out. Normally, we will not approve an overdraft for you in excess of the pre-determined amount assigned to your account type, which includes the NSF fee(s) of $36 charged for each NSF item.

We may refuse to pay an NSF item for you at any time, even though we may have previously paid NSF items for you. You will be notified by mail of any NSF items paid or returned that you may have, however, we have no obligation to notify you before we pay or return any item. The amount of any overdraft plus NSF fee you owe us shall be due and payable upon demand. If there is an NSF item paid by us on an account with more than one owner on the signature card, each owner and agent, if applicable, drawing/presenting the item creating the overdraft, shall be jointly and severally liable for such overdraft plus our NSF fee.

You should note that Bounce Protection will not be included in your available balance provided by a teller, on your ATM receipt or through City National Bank’s online or 24-hour telephone banking systems; however, you will have access for withdrawal purposes through the ATM.

1 NSF (non-sufficient funds) fees apply thereafter. NSFs are paid at the bank’s discretion.
